Pick up your mat

Pick up your mat
Jesus Heals on the Sabbath - John 5:1-15

What happens next is almost disarmingly simple. No ritual. No requirements. Just an invitation to rise.

Get up.

And he does.

But then comes the rest of the instruction: “Pick up your mat.”

That mat had carried his paralysis. It represented his past, his limitations, his long years of waiting.

Now it becomes testimony. The very thing that symbolized what held him down becomes proof that he is no longer there.

And almost immediately, resistance appears. Authorities object. Rules are cited. “You shouldn’t be doing that today.”

Isn’t that often how new life feels? Just as we begin to move forward, something challenges it. Maybe it’s external voices. Maybe it’s internal doubt.

But Jesus is not constrained by narrow interpretations of what is acceptable. He bends expectations. He places mercy above rigidity. He prioritizes restoration over regulation.

Sometimes walking into new life will look unconventional. Sometimes obedience will unsettle others.

But the call remains: Rise.

Carry what was.

Walk forward.

Christ, help me walk in freedom. Give me strength to carry my story without being bound by it. Amen.
